If I could take back all those years of using harsh alcohol-based toners, I would. What was I thinking? Now that I’m older and wiser, I know that gentle, hydrating toners are the way to go. A friend of mine recommended rosewater to me, and I haven’t used anything since. It’s natural, fresh, the smell is pleasant but not overwhelming, and it won’t irritate even the most sensitive skin.
Added bonus: buy it in bulk and use it as an after-shower body splash. It’s great for travel as well for that very reason: the two-in-one factor.
Tip: carry a small bottle in your purse and spray it over your makeup whenever your skin gets dry. In the winter it’s a Godsend and in the summer it keeps you refreshed: double win.
And no, it won’t mess up your makeup. Not only does rose water set (some might say fix) your makeup, it keeps your skin hydrated without having to apply any sort of cream.
I also like to use it on and off while doing my makeup (works well with both liquid and powder foundation) to keep my skin hydrated and allowing my makeup to blend much easier as I apply it.
You can find rosewater at a few price points, but in general, it’s pretty cheap. You can find a smaller 4oz bottle for as low as $4.00 if you go to the right place (I’d recommend Etsy, Whole Foods or your local organic grocer), but generally, you can get a good 8-oz bottle for around $10 to $20.00. I like Kiehl’s Rosewater Facial Freshener-Toner, 8.4 oz for $16.00. And of course there’s always the high-end (up to $40.00 in a variety of sizes). Check out several options below… !
So let’s see: it tones, moisturizes—oh, did I mention removes makeup?– re-hydrates, refreshes, deodorizes…

Oooh, I’m a big fan of rosewater as well (I LOVE the smell of roses)! I didn’t know I could use it to set makeup so I’ll have to give that a try.
Unless there’s some special ingredient in these other than rosewater, you can get an 8 – 10 oz bottle of plain rosewater at the supermarket for about 2.99 and put it in an atomizer.
the Kiehl’s one has alcohol in it though….
When I was really broke last summer, I tried regular rubbing alcohol as a toner. It doesn’t make my skin dry, it doesn’t cause redness, and when I got a couple of pimples, it got rid of them. It’s under a dollar at any store, so I don’t plan to ever use toner again.
Wich one do you use? Wich brand do you recommend?
Martha,
Who was your question meant for?
I love rosewater and have been using it for as long as I can remember. I even add a few drops in my face pack…love the cooling sensation and how it leaves my skin glowing for days..
