With a hint of Spring in the air, I know it’s that time of year when I need to bust out a new coat…a trench coat to be exact. It’s just the thing to get your through April’s showers and cool mornings!
Over the years I’ve collected a few of these styles but they all seem a little dated and in major need or revamping now, so inspired by this amazing cropped Burberry coat from their Spring 2010 collection I paid a visit to my tailor!
As someone who’s vertically-challenged a good tailor is my secret weapon to make everything in my closet fit and feel proportional to my body… and since I know she can work wonders I figured she could breathe new life (and hopefully a touch of Burberry) to my old coats!
We started by switching out the old tan buttons for larger, over-sized black ones. Next we shortened the sleeves to a more modern 3/4 length and finally we cut off about 6″ to bring the length way above the knee like the runway picture above!
For styling purposes, I got rid of the self belt and added a leather one instead to give it more of an edge! But I’m going to have to pass on the socks/sandals combo…that is one look this girl won’t be taking off the runway!
Now if you’ve got an old trench lying around, this mini-makeover could work wonders on your old coat and if you don’t have one yet, this style from F21 is def. a great buy…and I’m loving that checkered trim! And these budget buys below aren’t too bad either…

That trench is adorable! I love everything that was changed…and I agree! Socks and sandals should stay on the runway!
Are you in the NYC area? I have been searching for a tailor to do this to my trench coat for ages. Where did you go? I cannot find a reliable tailor for the life of me and I really don’t want to ruin the coat! Thx
Hi! I actually live in Philly and it took me forever to find someone. The best advice I can give it to take it to a store like Nordstrom’s or Saks…they have really good tailors who might be more expensive than your local dry cleaner but if they mess it up–they have plenty of inventory to replace it with!! Might be worth the extra $$ to minimize the risk of a bad job.
Oh…that’s not a bad idea. Thanks!
I love this whole outfit! The bag is awesome.
I’m in Philly as well. Would you mind sharing your tailor? I love this look! Thanks!
I’m actually wearing that trench today, lol!!

You should’ve included a pic of the final look of your “new” trench. I’d love to see it!
