The Hair Guide: Hair Extensions

by cheapchica11 on March 9, 2010

megan-fox-2I never really thought twice about hair extensions until this past fall.  A girl I worked with had the most beautiful hair I had ever seen. Very Megan Fox like…long, dark and super straight. I lusted over it for weeks until I got up enough courage to compliment her on her gorgeous locks.

To my surprise she responded that she had hair extensions. I was utterly in shock. Her hair looked so natural! From then on I was absolutely sold on the idea.

If you’re seriously looking to invest in hair extensions, I would first talk to your stylist to see what they recommend for your hair color and type. They will be able to lead you in the right direction…for they ARE the hair experts!

However just so you are up to date on your extension lingo, here is a very basic guide to those long precious locks:

There are two kinds of hair, synthetic and human. Synthetic will cost you way less but human hair looks more natural and you can keep it in for much longer…Lilliana even told me that she had her Great Lengths in for almost 3 months after her wedding!

hairdo_r4_c2She swears that the results were unbelievable and it’s all thanks to the kertain polymer Great Lengths uses to bind the fake hair to your real hair so that it blends naturally and so that it minimizes the damage.

But, if you’re looking for a simpler and cheaper alternative, there’s always clip in hair

Jessica Simpson along with her stylist Ken Paves, have created their own line called HairDo which gives you the look of long, lush hair but without the expense.  These extensions simply clip in and they come in a variety of colors so you can get the shade and style that works best for you for a whole lot less!

What do you think about extensions…are they super chic or far from it?

I’m not sure if I’m brave enough to get extensions. My hair is thick, long, and wavy. I think to start out something just to try the idea of longer hair, I would definitely try out Jessica Simpson’s Hair Do line. If you don’t like it…just take it out! That simple! I can see girls who have thin hair getting extensions to make their hair look thicker and have more volume to it.

I think it’s super chic! You should go for it! :)

Where I live (scotland Uk) The girsl here are all obsessed by them, some dancers I know swear by them as they never come out and I have to say I was fooled when I first saw them, seem good for the price for layering up.

Not sure about their advert though…. :) BX

I think that done well, extensions can be great for certain occasions and actor transformation and the like, but I’m still wary about them for everyday wear! I think the fact is that I’ve never seen good, natural looking extensions in person. (And I’d be afraid that my clip in ones would fall out!)

As Aimee said, if done right they can look fabulous. That being said, I think people should have fun with fashion and hair, and take risks. If it doesn’t look cheap, I say go for it.

The hands down BEST place to get inexpensive but real hair extensions that you clip in is at this beauty supply store on the corner of 35th and 8th Ave in NYC. You pick out the color, they measure your head, and in a few hours they will have a head full of clip ins ready for you to pick up. I think it costs only about $100. They look SO natural! You can wash and style them and reuse them over and over.

I wear extenstion from time to time!!! and I LOVE THEM! but i wouldnt recommend the Jessica Simpson style, i bought two sets and they are not high quality and they do not fit your head very well! I would suggest the clip in REMY human hair…they are fairly inexpenisve and they come in full sets but its multiple hair piece not one huge hair piece (like some of the simpson line, which make your hair look really BIG). The Remy you can get at a sally beauty supply and they can be dyed, curled, ironed etc…AMAZING!!

I’ve been wearing Great Lengths for about 4 or 5 years now and they are definitely the best by far. They are very expensive but worth every penny as far as I’m concerned. I do take them out every 5 months and give my hair a break for a week or so before putting them back in. During that time, I wear Lord & Cliff clip in extensions. They are a little more expensive but much better than the Jessica Simpson version with a far better color selection. Just thought I’d share. ;)

After I received a too-short cut, I tried Remy brand clip-in hair extensions and I loved the results! I got so many compliments and my friends could not tell my natural hair from the extensions. They are super easy to apply and stay in place very well. I think hair extensions can look great if they are done well, meaning a good color/texture match. I would also recommend avoiding extensions that are excessively long…it’s a dead giveaway.

I’ve been wearing extensions for 2 years now. Dont glue or sew them in I did both and I had to chop all my hair off because of the damage just go to Beauty Supply warehouse or Sally’s (however you can find real hair at bsw for 35$ versus 90 at sally’s) buy some clips, needle, and thread and you’re good to go. Make sure you don’t leave them lying around or sleep in them. They’ll get pretty messed up. They also sell little cases for extensions so they will last longer

That helped me a lot! Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks again!
